Trommel Screens

Why Graepels Trommel Screens?

Graepels manufacture Perforated, Rubber and Woven Mesh rotary screens which are bolted or welded into a drum for the Quarrying and Recycling Industries.

A trommel screen, also known as a rotary screen, sometimes referred to simply as a trommel, is a cylindrical drum-like screening device used to separate materials by size. It consists of a rotating drum with perforated or mesh-covered cylindrical sections. As the drum rotates, materials are fed into the top of the trommel.

Graepels trommel screens are manufactured using only the highest quality High Tensile and High Carbon Stainless Steel Wire and sheet steel. Our perforated screens are supplied in rubber or various metal types depending on the screening application.

We perforate and weave a full range of square, slotted, and elongated meshes for all screen sizes. Screens can be supplied with raw edges, hooked, or curved into Trommel- type rotary screens as well as custom screen lengths and diameters to suit all processing requirements.

Bulk Density Trommel:

Bulk density is important when choosing a replacement trommel screens. Why? Because Trommel screens move the volume of material around, the space of the known weight of material is essential to know as this will determine the performance and power which is required. Bulk density is the amount of Kg’s per cubic meter as the material enters the screen.

Other key factors include;

Granulometry which is the measurement and size of the distribution of grains or materials that are being processed.

Moisture content of material, understanding moisture content is important as it determines how “sticky” the material is this can cause blockages and contributes to the total wight of the material.

Maximum/Average Granule Weight: The weight of any one item entering the screen, this can ensure that you order the correct screen thickness for your rotary drum and ensure that it does not wear too quickly.

Perforated Trommels:

Hole size: 2mm – 150mm
Perforation Type: Round, square, slotted, and elongated perforations are available. Round and square perforations are most popular for screening, while slotted and elongated perforations are commonly used for Dewatering Buckets
Material Type: Mild Steel & Stainless-Steel.
Thickness: 1mm – 25mm thick
Plate Sizes: Plate sizes are up to 4m x 2m

Woven Wire Trommels:

Woven Wire Mesh Aperture: 2.5mm – 120mm
Woven Wire Thickness: 6mm – 13mm
Mesh Types: Square, Rectangular slotted

Crimp Types:

Flat Top – all mesh knuckles are on the underside, allowing material to move freely over the screen and keep plugging to a minimum
Double Crimp – Evenly crimped in warp and weft, providing rigid construction. Wires are under crimped and sprung together. Used with lighter wires to ensure tension in a light screen
Lock Crimp –Variation of double crimp, ensures wires remain in their exact positions

Rubber Trommels:

Material Thickness: Heavy duty mats and supply screens are available up to 35mm thick
Perforation Type: A variety of perforation shapes are available, including round, square, slotted, and hexagonal
Rubber Screens: are available from 4mm to 125mm
Percentage open area: 35% to 45% open area

Graepels manufacture Rubber Trommel Screens to suit all makes of machinery and all types of mobile and static plant across Ireland and the UK’s Quarrying and Recycling Industries. Rubber Screens are fabricated with a steel, plasma-cut plate, which holds and supports the Rubber
Screen. These screens are bolted onto the steel frame, which allows for quick and easy replacement and minimizes downtime.

The advantages of Rubber Trommel Screens over perforated trommel screens are that they have increased thickness, without excessive additional weight. They are impact absorbing and perform with reduced noise levels and have a longer life span. Rubber Trommel Screens are ideal as an impact section on the upper part of a screen box or, alternatively, on a complete deck where required.

Mining: Trommels are used for screening and classifying ore, gravel, and other mined materials before further processing.
Construction: They are employed in construction and demolition waste recycling facilities to separate and sort diverse types of materials, such as concrete, wood, and aggregates.
Municipal Solid Waste Management: Trommel screens are used in waste sorting facilities to separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable waste streams.
Composting: In composting facilities, trommels are used to screen and separate compost materials by size, helping to produce high-quality compost.
Aggregate Processing: Trommel screens are used in aggregate processing plants to separate and classify sand, gravel, and other aggregate materials according to size.
Biomass Processing: They are employed in biomass processing facilities to screen and separate wood chips, mulch, and other biomass materials.
Soil Screening: Trommels are used for soil screening and remediation projects to remove rocks, debris, and other contaminants from soil.
Waste Water Treatment: In wastewater treatment plants, trommel screens are used to remove large solids and debris from influent wastewater streams before further treatment. This helps protect downstream equipment and processes from damage and clogging.

Perforated Trommel Screens: Perforated trommel screens offer improved screening efficiency, reduced plugging and clogging, customizable hole patterns, enhanced material handling, improved ventilation, increased throughput capacity, durability, ease of maintenance, and versatility. They are suitable for various industries and applications requiring efficient screening and separation of materials.
Woven Wire Trommel Screens: Woven wire trommel screens provide durability, accurate screening, high tensile strength, versatility, efficient material flow, ease of maintenance, customisation options, and longevity. They are ideal for industries needing robust screening solutions for abrasive materials and where accurate separation is crucial.
Rubber Trommel Screens: Rubber trommel screens offer benefits such as reduced noise levels, enhanced wear resistance, reduced maintenance costs, improved screening efficiency, flexible screening surface, lightweight design, corrosion resistance, shock absorption, and customizable design. They excel in applications where noise reduction, wear resistance, and minimal maintenance are priorities.

Comparison:

Durability: All three types offer durability, but rubber trommel screens excel in wear resistance and shock absorption.
Screening Efficiency: Perforated and woven wire trommel screens offer precise screening, while rubber trommel screens provide efficient screening with reduced blinding.
Maintenance: Rubber trommel screens require the least maintenance due to superior wear resistance, followed by perforated trommel screens and woven wire trommel screens.
Special Features: Perforated trommel screens offer customizable hole patterns, woven wire trommel screens provide accurate screening, and rubber trommel screens offer noise reduction and shock absorption.
Applications: Each type is suitable for a range of industries, but rubber trommel screens may be preferred in noise-sensitive environments, while woven wire trommel screens excel in abrasion-heavy applications.

In summary, the choice between perforated, woven wire, and rubber trommel screens depends on factors such as the specific application requirements, material characteristics, maintenance considerations, and environmental factors. Each type offers unique benefits tailored to different screening needs.
