Expanded Metal / Mesh
Think Perforatation – Think Graepels
What expanded mesh and where is it used?
Expanded mesh, also known as expanded metal, is a versatile material manufactured by simultaneously slitting and stretching a sheet of metal to create a pattern of diamond-shaped openings.
Expanded mesh is available in various metals; Mild Steel, Pre-Galvised Steel, Aluminum and Stainless Steel.
Expanded Mesh is offered in two forms raised and flattened; however, the manufacturing process is the same with one difference. After exiting the press, it is milled to make a smooth and flat surface.
Raised Expanded Mesh: Has horizontal angles, resulting in a surface that is less smooth. Each sheet’s properties can be tailored to specific requirements, including pattern size and the degree of expansion applied. Despite the ability to customize the sheet’s size and thickness, the holes and the material surrounding them maintain uniformity in both size and thickness.
Flattened Expanded Mesh: In contrast to raised expanded metal, flat expanded metal boasts a sleeker and more streamlined profile. It is thinner and lies flatter, making it particularly advantageous in applications where abrasion resistance is less critical, and visual appeal takes precedence. The absence of ridges not only reduces weight compared to raised expanded metal but also lends a smoother, more
refined finish, enhancing its aesthetic appeal even further.

Please Note: Graepels offer expert advice on all considerations listed to ensure optimal results and the highest quality output for your application.
- Metal Types & Grades: A variety of material choices as listed above, metal type should be chosen based on its’ application for example, stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and ideal for outdoor applications, while aluminum is lightweight and suitable for indoor use.
- Metal Thickness: Expanded mesh comes in a range of thicknesses speak to our reps who can advise on the material thicknesses available
- Perforation Size: The size of the diamond-shaped openings in the expanded mesh affects factors such as visibility, ventilation, and the ability to filter out debris. Larger holes provide better airflow but may sacrifice some security, while smaller holes offer increased security but may restrict airflow.
- Pattern & Pitch: A smaller pitch provides higher strength and stability but may reduce visibility and airflow. A larger pitch offers better visibility and airflow but may sacrifice some strength.
- Sheet Size:
- Weight: Important where wight is a critical factor for example in automotive components or light weight structures.
- Fabrication: General fabrication is offered for all our products for customers who do not fabricate themselves.

- Good Strength – the three-dimensional shape of the mesh provide strength
- Light (depending on material and thickness this can change) lighter panels and components are easier to work with/handle and reduce transportation fuel and costs.
- Good for anti-slip or anti-skid and wind repellent.
- Low cost due to little or no material waste
- Hight % open area
