Graepels ‘Perf-Former’ in the Red Bull Soapbox Race

Sunday the 5th of June 2016 was The Big Day we had all been waiting for… the Red Bull Soapbox Race 2016 in Cork. With over 30,000 spectators and luckily one of the sunniest days Ireland has enjoyed for some time everything was set to be a brilliant day, and it didn’t disappoint.  Red Bull Soapbox returned to Ireland this year for the first time since 2004.

Spectators enjoyed lashings of Red Bull and sunshine on a glorious bank holiday weekend.  Over 60 teams from across Ireland and the UK attempted to negotiate the twists, turns and obstacles of the course on Patrick’s Hill, putting their homemade vehicles to the ultimate test of endurance and speed.

Our Graepels Team did not disappoint as our creation ‘Perf-Former’ was proudly one of the fastest on the day! The team’s extensive knowledge of engineering shone through as the Soapbox was designed perfectly to manoeuvre through the tight track on Cork’s notorious Patrick’s Hill which consisted of ramps, steps and a tight chicane that saw many many crashes over the course of the day.

The Top Gear theme that the team has chosen was perfect as the lads were true pros in this event. James May (Nicholas), Richard Hammond (Jamie), Jeremy Clarkson (Darren) and The Stig, whose identity will always remain hidden, (It was Nathan, but you didn’t hear it from us…) did a fantastic job. We are delighted to have been a part of this amazing event and we are thrilled that the team did so well – 28th out of 64!!!

It was all about the experience and we enjoyed every part of it. Congratulations to the Winning Team, “The Jumbo Breakfast Roll” who performed brilliantly. It was driven by Nigel Molloy, who made it down Patrick’s Hill in an impressive 37 seconds.

All of the Red Bull Soapbox teams impressed the Judges on the day. The judges were made up of camogie star Ashling Thompson, Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Chris O’Leary, Red FM’s Izzy Showbizzy, adventurer Mike Ó Sé and, of course, the infamous Dustin the Turkey – with their unique and original designs.

A big thank you to Red Bull Ireland for organising such a fantastic event. It was a pleasure for Graepels to be a part of the Red Bull Experience and hopefully there will be more events like this in the future.

Finally, just to add that the Graepels Team were interviewed by the Television Channel “Dave”, before, during and after the race. We hope to appear on their show in August…… Watch this space!
