PERFORATED STAIRWELL
A past project Graepels worked on was this impressive building at Clongriffin Train station! The staircase in Clongriffin Train Station is encased in a very unique and interesting stairwell made entirely from perforated metal with many millions of holes punched onto all its surfaces except its roof. The structure is comfortable to walk through as it shields people from the elements, allows visibility in both directions and offers greater security at night.
Its functional design is also aesthetically pleasing and one of our favorites in that it demonstrates the many practical benefits of also using perforated metal as a safe, strong, attractive weather screen, additionally it is difficult to vandalize and it is low maintenance.
Before construction began, the key question for the client was what material to use as the building had to offer reasonable shelter, but not too much, in order to discourage loiterers. Perforated metal was chosen in preference to glass for a number of reasons.
WHY CHOSE PERFORATED METAL
- Acts as a wind and rain screen
- Allows ventilation
- Strong and durable
- Discourages graffiti with a good resistance to vandalism
- Cost effective
- Easy and quick to install
- Low maintenance
- Aesthetically pleasing
Graepels Perforators are delighted to see perforated metals used in such a creative and clever way. The applications of perforated metal are endless.
To see how perforated metal is used in such an effective weather screen, please visit Clongriffin Train Station and look for the staircase and lift shaft outside the main building. You will see that the whole building is perforated with holes, including the lift shaft. Please see google shortcut –  https://goo.gl/maps/zaA6skFeRGA2
