Graepels Picture-Perf Project for the Bridges Family Practice

We recently completed a Picture-Perf job for the Bridges Family Practice doctor’s surgery on Newtownards Road, Belfast. This surgery is positioned on the peace line between the Protestant community and the Catholic community, and has been serving both sides of the community for the last 100 years. The surgery was named “Bryson Street Surgery”, but during the re-development they decided on a name change to coincide with the new design features and the locality.

There are three bridges on the same road as the Bridges Family Practice Surgery and this is where the original idea came from and also what influences the name. It is also used as a metaphor, the surgery being a bridge between both sides of the community. The staff at the Bridges Family Practice Surgery also planted a beautiful olive tree at the surgery which is also a symbol for peace.

As the designers wanted to make this piece of Picture-Perf resemble the locality and connect with the community, they wanted to use something in their design that everyone could relate to. This is where they came up with the idea to use starlings. The starlings nest in one of the bridges on the road where the Bridges Family Practice Surgery is located. It is a beautiful image to see the murmuration of starlings and this is why this image was chosen for the design. There are other reasons as to why starlings were chosen which include that they are a very social flock of birds. A flock of starlings presents a great sense of community, closeness, safety and protection and this idea reflects perfectly the hopes and wishes from all at Bridges Family Practice.

Originally the job consisted of 8 perforated sheets, but the artist wanted further developments made which would see the piece consist of curves and create a layering effect.
The finished Picture-Perf sculpture was made up of 3mm aluminium which was spaced out with tubular spacers and had Mushroom fitting LED lights attached to the underside. This helps to create a perfect example of how light and dark works with smaller and larger perforations to create shading.
