Perforated Metal in Architecture

Why use perforated metal in Architecture?
Safety, is just one reason to use perforated metal sheets and perforated metal products in architectural and construction projects.

Perforated metal allows for high visibility through the perforations. Depending on the specification of the perforated metal the holes can make it easy to see out of the buildings but harder for people to look in. This makes it ideal for applications in schools and car parks.

Perforated metal is used for its high open area which allows both air and light through which is important in the case of car parks which often require up to 40% open area.

Fire Towers often incorporate perforated metal cladding due to its high open area which allows for visibility and ventilation.

Other areas were perforated metal is used to ensure safety is in flooring, ramps and walkways. Graepels manufacture and range of anti-slip flooring to ensure slip resistance for underfoot safety. Graepels safedeck flooring is  available with perforations which offer grip to prevent slipping.

Weather Protection, perforated metal products like sun shades and shelters can offer protection from the weather elements. Often Architects and designers need to find a balance between sun and shade, natural light and protection from glare.

Perforated sheets are available in a range of hole sizes and patterns which can prevent too much sunlight from entering the building but still offer enough visibility to see out while protecting from the suns harsh glare.

Wind is another factor to consider, perforations act as wind breakers and can provide protection from rain and wind when used in shelters moreover, in the summer the perforations also allow for ventilation while mitigating the warmth of the sun, while in the winter a sufficient amount of perforations will allow enough sunlight to enter and provide warmth.

The Egg Pavilion. Geometric Perforated Sheets.

Graepels worked with Alex Pentek to create a perforated folding origami structure. Graepel manufactured perforated sheets which were 1.2mm Corten with fixed hinges.

Decorative Perforated Metal Sheets.

Graepels decorative metal sheets were manufactured for  use as sunshades for Watergardens in Hemel Hempstead. The panels were perforated using a variety of holes sizes and polyester powder coated. The complex pattern makes it difficult to see in but easy to see out and allows sunlight through.

Did you know that when you layer perforated sheets at different angles different patterns can be created? This video shows the gradual change in pattern when the panels are moved over one another.

This Project incorporated images of starlings using a process known as Picture Perf where varying hole sizes are perforated into a sheet to create an image. The perforated metal sheets were curved and back lit to accentuate this unique design.
